Beautiful bedroom

Creating a new look in a bedroom doesn’t have to mean an entire makeover, with all the expense and hassle that can entail.  It’s entirely possible to change the style and bring an up-to-the-minute look to your bedroom through the clever choice of colour, and introducing new bed coverings and curtains.

Next team bed sets with matching curtains for a chic co-ordinated look, in soft floral designs, or American Pioneer patchwork quilts.  For a more sophisticated style with long-lasting appeal, layering bed throws of cream and palest coffee with a white quilted silk throw, and replicating the colours with Parisian pleated linen curtains gives a sense of space and light to a smaller bedroom. If you are lacking window space, a novel idea for the autumn is to drape material across a wall in generous folds, and pick up the theme in your window curtains.  You can play with contrasting or matching colours in your use of material such as net curtains, and some of this season’s  deep cerise pinks contrasted with a touch of lime green creates a modern and fun look in a bedroom.

Imaginative uses of detailing can link your decor : the same print on curtains and duvet cover, but in subtly different shades of blue, for instance.  If you are planning to replace your bed, consider how you might match your new purchase with a different window dressing.  White plantation blinds look fabulous with a white painted wood bed, and a traditional French “bateau lit” style bed can be complemented by heavy gold silk curtains.

Having an eye for detail extends to planning how you will hang your curtains, and the design of the pleating.  While a simple wrought-iron curtain pole can look just right teamed with a modern bright contrasting striped fabric, it may not be the best choice for a more traditional material such as velvet.  Deep headings work well with some materials, while lighter and lacier curtains can look good gathered in looser folds from wooden rings.

Modern variations on the four-poster are still popular, although much more pared-down in design than the enormous wooden beds that our ancestors might have slept in!  Draping swathes of material from the frame to the floor gives a touch of luxury and femininity to your bedroom.

Patterns
Some homeowners want a clean, minimal look in their bedroom, but to bring your bedroom into 2012 a good thing to consider is the use of patterns.  For neutrally coloured rooms, a small injection of patterned wallpaper can make a real impact. Think along the lines of concentric circles or narrow stripes. You can keep the colour of this dark and plain if opting for a subtle and elegant style or select something brighter if you want this feature to really stand out.

modern space saving furniture

Space-saving furniture
Aside from the fact that a regular bedroom does not always come with endless space, having a room that is too cluttered can make it hard for people to sleep and they may not feel comfortable in their own home. With this in mind, consider purchasing furniture designed to fit the shape of your room or beds with integrated storage to minimise the clutter in your bedroom. A wardrobe that stretches the length of a wall, for instance, will provide all the space you need on the inside but will not take up much of the interior room.

Pick bold accessories
For many people, the way to make a room unique is by adding a few accessories that are different to what they have had before. This can be as simple as a large, brightly coloured clock to dominate one wall.
Unusual mirrors are another way to make your bedroom stand out from the crowd. Great options include sunburst or ‘solar’ mirrors which mimic the shape and appearance of the sun to make a unique bedroom feature.

Other modern mirror styles see slices of glass layered on top of one another to create bold shapes and patterns while black glass mirrors are popular with those opting for art deco styles in their interior design.

Brighten up your bed
For rooms with more minimal decoration, the bed should be the focal point of the room. There are a few ways this can be done, starting with customising your sheets and covers. Avoid overpowering floral designs, unless these include bright colours on a dark background which will instantly modernise your room.

Another fashionable way to spice up your bedroom is the purchase of a four-poster bed. Previously a thing of the aristocracy and Royal family, these days there are many types of modern four-poster bed to match your chic interior.

These vary in price so do your research and find the perfect one to suit your bedroom.

Revamping your boudoir for 2012

bedroom renovation 2012

A woman’s boudoir is an intensely personal space.  It reflects her personality – it’s where she dreams, experiments with clothes and styles to achieve the look that she wants, and surrounds herself with her favourite things – photos of loved ones, a colourful sari bought on that gap year trip to India. And just as we look to renew our wardrobe to reflect a new season’s look, so even that most favorite room sometimes needs revamping.

Boudoir describes not only the space, but also a style of furnishing that is more feminine and more ornate than a simply functional bedroom. The boudoir style has drawn its inspiration from French and Renaissance furnishings, and more recently, from the rural cottage look, combining the simplicity of white walls and woollen rugs with luxurious bedding. The bed is the centrepiece of the room, and so it’s essential that you choose a style that you know will fit with the overall look that you are aiming to achieve.

Laura Ashley offer a king sized bed in their cream painted Clifton range which is ideal for the focal point of a boudoir. Complemented by a delicate French Empire style wardrobe, dressing table and chest of drawers, it provides just the look that is associated with the boudoir style. Making a deeply padded and buttoned headboard for your bed, covered with fabric that matches curtains and walls, creates a further sense of comfort and luxury.

If you are going for silver or gold in this Olympic year, choose wallpaper in a shimmering metallic design to add a touch of glamour to your revamped boudoir, and build the look with a grey silk quilted cover on your bed. Indulge yourself with a satin-covered chaise-longue as a day bed, (a woman has to have her siesta), and hunt for shabby-chic chandeliers to use as decoration or to adapt for side- or bedside table lights.  The hint for lighting in your boudoir is to keep it low and subtle, and to have small spotlights over a mirror where you need a brighter light for making up. Use a variety of mirrors to reflect light, to add a touch of decadence, and just for the joy of decoration.

5 Tips For A Beautiful Bedroom

Posted by | Posted in Bed room | Posted on 27-09-2012

Beautiful bedroom

Bedrooms are a paradox. On the one hand, most of the time we spend in them we don’t see them. On the other hand, the relatively short time that we do see them has a significant effect on our life.

Sleep is a very important component of human existence. A recent study reported in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found “that having a sleep disturbance is associated with clinically meaningful reductions in health-related quality of life”. Thus, while results vary due to several factors, it is clear a lack of sleep may create health situations that cause people’s lives to be poorer.

A big part of setting the stage for a good night’s sleep is the relatively short time one sees one’s bedroom. Thus, this period needs to be extremely effective. We can maximize the effectiveness by creating a bedroom that is beautiful for us.

Creating a beautiful bedroom is a blend of the 5 D’s: design, decor, defence, dynamics and delight. Design involves the plan or arrangement of the physical space. For a new house this would be the architect’s drawing of the walls, windows, and doors. For an existing residence, this would be the placing of furniture and fixtures.

Decor, as its name implies, relates to the room’s decoration. This includes both furniture and soft furnishings. It also includes such decisions as bare windows, curtains, or blinds; wood floors, tiles, or carpet; minimalism, “moderatism” or overstuffing.

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary. It should defend you from “evils” such as the stresses of the workplace, the family, and life in general. This can be done through the use of favorite objects (pictures, stuffed animals, knick knacks), scents (candles, incense, flowers), and sounds (music, natural noises, a mini-waterfall).

Pink bedroomBedrooms should be dynamic “living things”. They should not be museums or monuments to “Bedroom Beautiful Magazine”. They should move with us, respond to our needs, cater to our comfort. Delight is that elusive something which makes your bedroom uniquely you. It is the part of you that becomes infused into the space. For example, a client’s favorite colour was purple. Everyone knew it as she was surrounded by purple every day in one form or another. She painted her bedroom walls white and her bedroom ceiling a dark lilac.

Combining the 5 D’s to create your beautiful bedroom is a personal process that produces highly individual results. However, there are several common tips. The first is quality. Quality items make us feel good. It is recommended that between the choice of more, cheaper items and fewer, quality items, choose the latter. The second is courage. Despite what others may say, be brave enough to create the bedroom that is right for you. Lastly, do it now. As stated above, sleep is an important component of “the good life”. Why delay living it to the fullest? Sweet dreams!
