DIY Misfortune: Don’t risk a hammer to the thumb
Posted by | Posted in Accomodation, Cleaning & Maintenance, Do It Yourself | Posted on 15-11-2012
In the grand scale of things, walking away from a DIY project with a purple thumb is never quite worth it. There are in fact around 600 DIY accidents every single day, though with rising household bills, the necessity of DIY is becoming ever more prevalent.
As the holiday season approaches, it is an interesting fact to consider that most DIY disasters happen around the holidays; when the temptation of DIY is influenced by good old fashioned holiday boredom.
For those who fancy a little bit of DIY maintenance should also be aware that there are certain tools which hold the most danger to inexperienced hands:
- Knives and Scalpels
- Saws
- Grinders
- Hammers
- Chisels
But what are the main causes for DIY mishaps?
Interestingly enough besides the boredom of having very little to do, an overconfidence of skills is largely to blame for the majority of DIY disasters. With this in mind however, sometimes even the most practical of people have DIY Accidents.
In March of 2012, it was reported by Top News US that one man (a former fireman) even sawed off his own arm. Using a saw to break up wood in his back yard, the instrument quickly worked its way through his arm leaving him no choice but to pick it up and seek medical assistance. This however, even for DIY disasters, is an extreme case of what can go wrong. With that in mind though, aside from cutting wood, what forms of DIY should you embark upon?
No matter how small the task, or how simple it may seem, you should ask yourself a few vital questions: Is the task something that I have the skill to complete or Do I have the correct tools to do it with?
Would it in fact be better to get in the experts?
The last question is probably one of the most important. Although hiring professional help may seem a little expensive, the average cost required for fixing DIY mishaps is around the $200 mark. Not only will you save money on the hiring of workmen, but most importantly for the upcoming holiday seasons, it shall save you precious time!
Companies such as Every Home, are there to help you with your household maintenance problems, whatever you are trying to do, whether it is electrical, plumbing or roofing. If however, you feel that you can take on the task at hand, here are a few basic tips that will help you on your way to successful home improvement:
Never cut corners!
Whether this concerns the safety aspects of carrying out the job or the actual maintenance itself, it is important to do the job thoroughly and with great care.
Buy a first aid kit!
Important for general house safety anyway, a first aid kit is a crucial item when carrying out any DIY. They are quite cheap and can help you quickly sort out any small cuts or grazes.
Remember to turn off the electricity!
If you are working on simple electrical jobs, though this may seem an obvious suggestion, the consequences of forgetting such a simple thing can be great. If you are unsure at any point, seek professional assistance.

As a carpenter I have come across a lot of jobs where I have had to make a bad DIY job good again! One of the worst DIY’ers in my career was a huge 6 bedroom house where all the doors were hung incorrectly. Although it may sound like a easy fix, to redo the whole house with parts of the oak doors needing altering became very time consuming for me and fairly expensive for the owner! :/
